What is root canal therapy?

A root canal is a dental procedure to remove inflamed pulp or nerve tissue from the inside of the tooth. The inside is then cleaned, disinfected, filled, and sealed completely. Root canal therapy is a widely performed treatment to eliminate bacteria from the affected root canal. The procedure helps minimise the risk of reinfection and preserves the natural tooth structure.

There’s no reason to be concerned if your doctor advises a root canal to treat an infected or badly damaged tooth. This is a favoured treatment method to relieve pain and restore the health of the tooth.

How do you perform a root canal?

A small hole is made through the crown to reach the tooth pulp. Afterwards, tiny surgical tools are used to remove tissue within the root of the tooth, which consists of blood vessels and nerves. The dentist then cleans and sterilises the pulp chamber and root canals and fills them.

How do you know you require a root canal?

An infected tooth requires urgent treatment in order to clear the infection. Generally, the following warning signs are a strong indication you need a root canal:

• Long-lasting tooth pain: Pain deep inside the tooth that migrates throughout the face and jaw indicates an infection.
• Pressure increases pain: When touched, the tooth begins to hurt, which indicates damage to the nerve.
• Swollen and tender gums: When the gums are swollen and tender, an infection is present that could possibly be from an infected nerve.
• Inflamed/swollen jaw: The jaw begins to swell when pus fails to drain from the infected tooth.
• Discolouration of the tooth: An infection of the tooth pulp prevents blood from reaching the tooth, which turns a darkened hue.
• Loose tooth: Infection around the root of the tooth can cause the tooth to feel loose.
