Crowns and bridges are immovable (prosthetic) dental devices that remain fixed onto remaining teeth and implants and can only be removed by a professional dentist.

When are crowns recommended?

A crown functions like a cap, concealing the damaged parts of the tooth. Crowns are used to improve the strength, appearance and shape of the teeth. They are inserted over the tooth or implant and are typically made from porcelain or ceramic to match the natural shade of the remaining teeth.

A crown is recommended for the following reasons:

• To substitute for large fillings where insufficient tooth structure is remaining.
• To safeguard a weakened tooth, minimising the risk of fracturing.
• To connect a bridge.
• To converge a dental implant.
• To conceal a poorly structured or discoloured tooth.
• To protect and cover a tooth that’s been treated with root canal therapy.
