Conscious Sedation
What is conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation is administered by a qualified sedationist who provides an IV drip in the dental rooms to deliver medication that helps the patient relax and sleep while dental procedures are being done.
It is a treatment that is advised for highly anxious patients, uncooperative patients, or where big, invasive procedures are required.

FAQ
How does it differ from general anaesthetic in theatre?
General anaesthetic is a much deeper type of sedation compared to conscious sedation. Under general anaesthetic, you are unable to breathe on your own and require a ventilator to assist with breathing. In contrast with conscious sedation, you can still breathe independently. Additionally, conscious sedation is a lighter sedation, leading to a quicker recovery after the procedure.
Can I drive after conscious sedation?
You cannot. You would need someone to fetch you after you had any procedure done under conscious sedation.
